CHAPTER 25

Recuperation

Friday, December 5th ~ 2014

It had been a wonderful time really, despite the pain and her limited manoeuvrability for the first week or so. Sarah Bradbeer had been recuperating at her grandparents’ cottage just outside High Wycombe.

She’d been injured just over a month ago – it wasn’t bad enough to attend hospital though, especially given the reason for her injuries and all the potential explanations. Her father had checked her wounds at the scene, then called Jason and Dan, her two brothers. They’d treated the cuts the best they could and took her upstairs to rest in her apartment. It was only the following day, when she’d had a good painkiller-induced sleep and the adrenalin had faded, that Sarah realised she was somewhat worse than she’d originally thought. As well as the lacerations, one of which was fairly deep, she’d sprained her left wrist after falling awkwardly. So it was decided that she would get away from work, and The Time Store, to heal and recover.

Once away from London, her life felt simpler… and lazier… as everything was done for her. Meals were cooked for her, clothes washed, the house kept tidy – she had time to chat with her grandparents. There were no day to day meetings with clients, no time travel, and she had space to relax and think.

The thinking side of things wasn’t always good, as however much she tried to avoid it, she knew she had to tackle that incident – Oliver in the Round Room – she was still shocked about the entire thing.

He’d been there as she’d returned from her time trip – just standing there – demanding his missing ‘hacked off’ hand. When she’d told him that it had been incinerated, he’d kicked off, produced a knife and, using his one remaining hand, lunged for her. He went berserk, chanting something about ‘death’s sting’, thrusting and slashing and cutting again and again, attacking her left arm. It seemed as though he didn’t want to kill her (she assumed he wouldn’t dare to attempt to take the life of one of his own Bradbeer descendants) but he definitely intended to maim her, as he had been – cause damage to her, to hurt her. And he’d succeeded – she’d been hurt in more ways than one.

Although her arm had been worse than her family had thought on that first day, it was healing nicely now; only a slight stiffness and pain remained after the initial agony. She assumed there’d be some scarring, given the multiple cuts she’d received. Sarah had come to terms with that, figuring that she was well overdue an injury in the course of time travel. Okay, it didn’t technically happen during time travel, but that wasn’t really the point. What was more difficult was dealing with the fact that it was Oliver Bradbeer who’d done this to her.

She couldn’t stop reliving over and over that brief time with Oliver. He had obviously been in some heightened state of panic, made worse by the realisation that his arm had been destroyed.
